Before Judge Kevin McKeever in Tama County District Court in Toledo:

Matthew Jay Cook, 23, Haverhill, Iowa, entered a written guilty plea to driving while barred as a habitual offender. He was sentenced to a suspended 180-day jail sentence, fined and assessed Cook was charged on Oct. 11, 2019, on Beautiful Street by Tama Police Officer Jamie Youngbear.

DouglasRegin Thomas, 23, rural Tama, entered a written guilty plea to 1st offense drunken driving. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail with all but two days suspended, fined and assessed court costs totaling $1,698 and placed on self-supervised probation to the 6th Judicial District Department of Correctional Services for one year. He was directed to complete recommendations of a substance abuse evaluation and to complete the 12-hour course for drinking drivers at Kirkwood Community College.

Thomas was charged on Dec. 15, 2019,in the 1100 block of 290th Street, rural Garwin, after his vehicle went into a ditch, by Tama County Deputy Sheriff Joseph Quandt.

Before Chief Judge Patrick R. Grady:

LeRoy Thomas Paul Hayes III, 32, Waterloo, admitted violation of terms of probation. He was found in contempt of court, ordered to serve 42 days in jail and credited with 42 days already served. He was directed to return to the Hope House residential facility upon availability of bed space and to be held in the Tama County Jail until it is. He was cited in a probation violation report for having used a synthetic narcotic substance known as “Spice” or “K2” while a resident of Hope House on Jan. 30 and a violation of the residential placement agreement for knowledge of his whereabouts on Dec. 30, 2019.

Hayes entered and Alford Plea on a charge of 2nd degree arson on Aug.4, 2019. An Alford Plea is not an admission of guilt but a recognition the prosecution likely has enough evidence to gain a conviction in court. He received a suspended 10-year prison sentence, was placed on probation for three years and ordered to reside in a community corrections center for up to one year.

Hayes was charged in a County Attorney’s information for allegedly setting a vehicle on fire on Nov. 19, 2018, at 160th Street and K Avenue, rural Traer.
