Wolfe final candidate for City Council

Jay Wolfe

Jay Wolfe will be the fifth candidate running for Traer City Council in the November election, running a platform of experience as a business owner.

“Initially what got me into this situation was citizens approaching me to venture into this election based off what they knew I can do,” Wolfe said. “I’ve spoken with them about economic development and life-long residents asked me if I would be interested in running for City Council this year.”

Wolfe has been been a resident of Traer for nearly four years. He currently owns and operates MaidPro of Cedar Valley since 2010, selling real estate prior to that. In the Cedar Valley, Wolfe has promoted suicide awareness, mental health and co-hosted a benefit for the three boys who died in a car crash in Cedar Falls several years ago. Wolfe and his wife Emily have a daughter, Bentley, and two boys and Emily’s daughter.

“The main thing that brought me to Traer was the close-knit community and the school was a huge attraction for us,” Wolfe said. “It’s a good community to raise a family.”

As a business owner and previously in real estate, Wolfe believes his biggest attribute is prior experience with economic development and with negotiations. He has owned his company for almost 10 years and believes his ability to engage with people makes him a suitable candidate for the city council.

“I want to bring more transparency to our local government by exploring live streaming council meetings,” Wolfe said. “There’s a lot of folks in town that get informed of decisions after they are made, so they don’t get to voice their opinions. We also need to maintain focus on keeping our volunteer organizations going. Our fire and EMS departments need to be adequately taken care of. They are spread thin.”

Another topic Wolfe and other candidates have been approached about is the recent discussion of a city police force. Wolfe hopes to consult with law enforcement officers in area communities to decide the best option for Traer as a community.

“I’ve been talking to people throughout town and I’m open to two situations,” Wolfe said. “If we continue our relationship with Tama County, there needs to be meetings to come to terms on what our expectations as a community are and make sure they can feasibly meet those expectations. After all the years of providing services to Traer, we owe them that opportunity. However, I’m not opposed to exploring the idea of forming our own police force if they are unable to meet the requirements of our community.”

The election will be held on November 5 with three seats open. Residents may vote for three of the five candidates to fill the seats.

“I feel our community is at a pivotal point of moving in the right direction but we need the correct people to move us further forward,” Wolfe said.
