Turns out that long drive to play an out-of-district foe was worth it. The Union Knights had three record-breaking individual performances en route to their 45-14 thrashing of Cascade last Friday night.

The game, which promised to be a tough one if for no other reason than the travel distance, marked the final chance for the Knights to finish up their non-district schedule on a high note – and boy, did they ever.

Quarterback Jay Scheel set a Union record for passing yards in a game with 293, including four touchdown passes. Scheel also rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown.

Trev Hadachek had an even more mind-blowing night, catching for 191 yards – another Union all-time record – and three touchdowns. Hadachek and Scheel combined for the other record: a 97-yard bomb thrown out of their own end zone that Hadachek took to the house.

The running game was also strong as senior running back Andrew Osuna led the team with 66 yards on 17 carries. Head coach Joe Hadachek has been impressed with the way Osuna has stepped up and maken the most of his opportunity in the backfield.

“He’s been waiting patiently behind Wes Burnside for years, and he’s stepped up and added a different dimension to our football team,” Hadachek said. “What he might lack in size and speed he makes up for with agility and quickness. He’s tough, he’s a tough runner and he knows that his job is to hang onto the football.”

In the receiving game, Mitch Dierks also had a touchdown reception and 38 yards receiving.

Union’s defense also proved stout again this week, with Jace Hadachek leading the team with 11 total tackles, including one for a loss.

Trev Hadachek took time away from lighting it up on offense to also wreak havoc for the opposing quarterback. He had two interceptions in the contest and returned them for a total of 58 yards, setting Union up with good field position on both drives.

Will Crees, Austin Dengler and Christian Gray provided a solid defense up the middle as the linebackers had seven, six and six tackles, respectively.

The Knights will need to keep their momentum going as they take on district-leading Waukon this Friday night. Waukon is currently 5-0 overall and 3-0 in district play and has looked impressive in the first half of the season. Only two teams have scored in double digits against Waukon, the most recent being Osage in a 44-13 loss. Hadachek forsees a very competitive game on both sides of the ball.

“They’re similar to us in that they dropped down from 3A to 2A football,” Hadachek said. “They have great speed, great strength and they’re a very physical football team.”
