That’s what you call a tune-up game. Union ran, ran and ran some more in a 52-27 thrashing of Hampton-Dumont on Friday night, setting up a showdown this weekend that will likely determine the district winner and #1 seed in the playoffs.

Andrew Osuna eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the second straight week, finishing the day with 112 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Osuna averaged 10.2 yards per carry, getting good blocking from his offensive line and showing some nice moves once he broke out into the open field.

Quarterback Jay Scheel also did the majority of his damage on the ground, rushing for 113 yards and four scores. Scheel threw for 115 yards and a touchdown.

Trev Hadachek once again led the team with 63 yards receiving and a touchdown.

Christian Gray was dominant on the defensive side of the ball, recording two and a half tackles for loss, and nine total tackles. WIll Crees and Josh Clark were among the other Knights who had tackles for loss in the contest. Dalton Crosser had a fumble recovery.

The Knights will now head on the road for their most important game of the season – a showdown against undefeated New Hampton that will, in all likelihood, decide the district.

Union is currently ranked third in the state in Class 2A in the latest Des Moines Register poll, with New Hampton in eighth. Other polls have the Knights anywhere from third to sixth.

New Hampton has held four of their seven opponents in the single digits points-wise this season. Only once has an opposing team scored 20 or more against the Chickasaws. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
