LaVoy M. “Bud” Thiessen, 87

LaVoy Mearl “Bud” Thiessen, 87, of Chelsea, passed away Friday, December 27, 2013 at his home in rural Chelsea. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at 10:00 AM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with Pastor Brian Gumm officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Visitation will be held Monday, December 30, 2013 from 4-7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home.

Bud was born on December 12, 1926, in rural Benton County, Iowa, the son of William H. and Mary (Junge) Thiessen.

Bud served his county in the U.S. Army during World War II.

On February 16, 1950, he was united in marriage to Marlene Banes Hladky in Toledo, Iowa. Bud was a farmer and also did trucking. He loved feeding cattle. Bud enjoyed playing cards with friends in Vining. He also enjoyed visiting with trucking buddies at Casey’s and watching and playing baseball. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was very proud of his sons and grandsons who served in the military.

Survivors include his wife of sixty three years, Marlene of Chelsea; his children, LaVoy M. “Sam” Jr. (Janet) Thiessen of Parker, CO, Randall “Joe” (Becky) Thiessen of Toledo, Michael P. (Kathy) Thiessen of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, and Sheryl K. (George) Shank of Long Grove, IA; fourteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ina Mae Callahan of Dysart, his twin sister, LaVon Novak of Belle Plaine, and Ruth Suchy of Belle Plaine; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a son, Mitchell Thiessen; a great-granddaughter, Mia Thiessen; three brothers, Willard, DuWane and Marvin Thiessen; and one brother in infancy.

A memorial fund has been established. *
