Donald M. Reed, 74

Donald M. Reed, 74, of Waterloo, passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at his home. Memorial service will be held at Harvest Vineyard Church on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 11 a.m. with a private family burial at St. Albert’s Cemetery in Lamont.

Donald Morrison Reed was born August 2, 1939 at a farmhouse in Garrison, Iowa: the son of George and Thelma (Dake) Reed. He attended a one room school house than graduated from Dysart High School with the class of 1957. Donald was united in marriage to Kathryn “Katy” Barta on November 22, 1991 in Waterloo, Iowa they have made Waterloo their home for 23 years. He helped on his parents’ farm for years until moving to Waterloo, then worked at John Deere for 30 years as a welder until his retirement. Together, Donald and Katy would travel on Amtrak from LaCrosse, Wisconsin to Spokane, Washington and go through the Rocky Mountains to visit family, changing paths every few years. Donald loved the whole Bible and would study it for hours. He also loved music and played the guitar for hours.

Donald passed away on Tuesday, June 03, 2014 at his home, under hospice care, at the age of 74. He is preceded in death by his parents and a step-grandson C.J. Featherston. Donald is survived by his wife Katy of Waterloo; 4 sons: Scott Reed of Austin, Texas, Michael Reed of Austin, Texas, Alan (Pam) Beasley of Post Falls, Idaho and Kurt (Jan) Borgwardt of Vinton, Iowa; 3 daughters: Eva (Gary) Schlichting of Traer, Iowa Donna Reed Cook of Martindale, Texas and Lisa (Michael) Featherston of Waterloo, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; a brother Richard (Lynn) Reed of Manley, Iowa and 2 sisters: Karen (Derald) Merchant of Vinton, Iowa and Monica Koshivas of Bennett, Iowa. Donald will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
