Redhawk ladies begin 2012 with great performance

The North Tama High School girls track team opened its 2012 season with a bang, finishing second at the opening meet of the season at Denver on April 3rd.

The girls got strong performances from both the individual events and the relay teams, racking up a total of 117 points, a close second to the 126 points scored by A-P.

In the High Jump, senior Kailey Klavido finished first with a jump of 5′ 4″, earning the team 10 points.

In the Discus, two North Tama athletes finished in the top six. Senior Nicole Schlichting finished third with a throw of 89′ 9″, earning six points, and junior Frankie Krienert finished sixth with a 77′ .5″ throw, earning a point. Schlichting also added eight points with her second place finish in the Shot Put, where she threw for 33′ 3″.

Some of the team’s younger members also contributed in the jumping events, with sophomore Josie Youel taking first place and ten points with a jump of 15′ 5″. Freshman Anna Kvidera jumped 14′ 9″, good enough for fifth place and two points.

In the day’s distance event, the 3000 Meter Run, the Redhawk ladies took second and fourth place, with freshman Abi Watson finishing second at 12:07.87, and junior BrandiAnne Daub finishing fourth at 13:36.83.

The girls also performed well in the sprint events, with Anna Kvidera running a 13.87 in the 100 Meter Dash, good enough for second place.

In the 400 Meter, freshman Jessi Jacobs finished third with a 1:06.25, and senior Leah Franklin also chipped in with a sixth place finish at 1:17.49. Jacobs also added two points to her team’s total with a fifth place finish in the 200 Meter Dash, running that event in 29.01.

The 800 Meter Run had similar results, with freshman Alexa Dostal finishing third at 2:55.54 and Franklin in sixth with a time of 3:03.29. Daub was the only North Tama girl to participate in the 1500 Meter Run, finishing in fourth at 6:20.62.

In the hurdle events, the Redhawks placed once, earning four points off a fourth place finish in the 100 Meter Hurdles by Anna Kvidera at 18.37.

In the team relay events, North Tama finished fifth in the 4X100 with a time of 58.81. The team had a much stronger showing in the 4X400, finishing first with a time of 4:47.91.

The ladies also finished strong in the Sprint Medley Relay with a time of 2:08.95, good enough for second place. They performed similarly well in the Distance Medley Relay, earning second place with a time of 4:56.99.

The Redhawks participated in a meet at Dike-New Hartford on Thursday, April 12, that ended too late to be included in this edition. The girls are also in action at Benton on Friday at 4:45 p.m., and again Monday at Hudson at 4:30 p.m.
