Track team finishes fourth

The North Tama High School boys track team finished fourth in their meet at South Tama last Monday. The boys competed against Clarksville, GMG, East Marshall, Northeast Hamilton, Blairsburg and others.

The meet was the second of the season for the Redhawks, who improved upon their fifth place finish in the opening meet at Denver High School.

In the individual running events, North Tama earned six points in the 400 Meter Dash with a fourth place finish by Mitchell Boerm, at 56.78 seconds, and a sixth place finish by Jacob Watson, who ran a 59.37.

In the 800 Meter Run, Omar Martinez grabbed second place with a time of 2:18.25. Jordan Mask also placed for the Redhawks, coming in fifth at 2:25.72.

In the relay events, the boys fared well as a team, coming in fourth in the 4X100 Meter Relay with a time of 50:12.00. The team also finished fourth in the 4X400, clocking in at 4:14.15.

The highlights of the day for the runners were first place finishes in two of the relay events, including the 4X800. The boys earned their spot atop the leaderboard with a time of 8:59.27. In the 1600 Meter Medley Relay, the Redhawks outpaced the competition just enough at 3:54.65, earning their other first place finish.

The jumping and throwing events were also strong points for the team, as Mitchell Boerm took home first place in the High Jump with a 6′ jump. Nick Whannel finished fourth in the Long Jump at 18′ 6.75″.

A pair of fourth place finishes in the Discus and Shot Put also earned the Redhawks some much needed points at the meet. Trey Keahna had a 98′ 2″ throw in the Discus, and Chris Droulla had a 35′ 1.75″ toss of the Shot Put.

Overall, the team finished with 67 points.

The Redhawks competed in four events on the road in the span of just seven days. The Traer Star-Clipper will have continuing coverage of the track team as they work their way into the heart of the 2012 season.
