“Buy Local, Buy Fresh is the topic for June 25

Kamyar Enshayan from Cedar Falls will speak on Thursday, June 25 at 7 p.m. at the Cultural Center. He has worked on the UNI Local Food Program since 1997 and often consults with communities on strengthening their local food economy. Also we will recognize our own local vendors from Traer’s Wednesday’s Farmers Market: Marlus and Laurence Svoboda; Carolyn and Ken Adolphs; Peggy and Roger Drinovsky; Jeanette and Wes Tomlinson; Christy Sienknecht and hope most of them can be with us that evening.

The “Buy Local, Buy Fresh” campaign is designed to help food suppliers as well as consumers by strengthening the local economy and improving the environments through shorter transport networks. At the same time, these foods supply fresher, better tasting and healthier foods to us. Enshayan will talk about the benefits of this system while giving attendees information on where they can find these foods in Iowa.

Kamyar is an engineer with graduate training in thermodynamics, solar energy and climatology. In 2008 he received the Practical Farmers of Iowa’s Sustainable Agriculture Achievement Award. He is director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Education at UNI and is a member of the Cedar Falls City Council.
