On Wednesday, September 23, four of the La Porte-Dysart FFA members, Tyson Fleshner, Adam Ahrendsen, Gabe Hanson, and Sam Fehl, competed at the Northeast District FFA Soils Contest held at the Farm Lab at Hawkeye Community College. There were four soil pits dug for evaluation. The competing members were given thirty minutes to observe each pit and answer questions regarding qualities of the soil and its suitability for agricultural and domestic use. “I learned how to evaluate soil quality so it can be preserved and used more productively,” said Tyson Fleshner. This hands-on learning competition gives students real world practice identifying, managing, and sustaining soil! As a team, they earned a bronze medal and will be able to apply their knowledge in their future careers.
