Meet John Cain, North Tama’s new superintendent

North Tama Superintendent John Cain.

Hello North Tama! I am excited to start my journey as superintendent with the northern portion of Tama County. As most of you already know, my name is John Cain and I also serve the South Tama County District as their superintendent. Through operational sharing, both North Tama and South Tama will benefit financially from sharing the role of superintendent. This memo serves as an opportunity to introduce myself to the community.

My wife, Kathy, and I recently celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary in July. Together, we have three grown sons who have enriched our lives with four grandchildren. Another grandchild is on the way this November.

Keaton, our youngest, is married to Morgan. Together, they live in Cedar Rapids with their little one, Scarlet, and are expecting another child in November. Keaton is a recent graduate of the University of lowa. He is currently enrolled in their MBA program and served our country for five years, ending his career in the military as a tabbed Ranger.

Kameron, our middle child, spends his time with Emily and their three little ones, including twins. Kameron is a union electrician in Des Moines. Their twins, Deckard and Cambria, are headed into second grade. Cordelia, their youngest, will enroll in preschool this fall.

Aaron, our oldest, is single and his significant other is Charlene. The two of them enjoy the Denver, Colorado life of fishing, mountain climbing, and their latest, a marathon. Aaron is in sales and works from home. Together, they travel a lot and just got back from a 10 day trip to Japan.

Aside from knowing a little about my family, my professional career has been spent as an educator. My teaching career started in 1992 in Clinton, Iowa. I taught in Clinton for 12 years teaching third and fifth grade. Upon completing my administrative degree, I transitioned to the AEA as a consultant for a year and then was hired as an elementary principal and curriculum director with Calamus Wheatland CSD, a District very similar to North Tama. After five years in this position, I was offered the position of elementary principal with the Bettendorf CSD at Grant Wood Elementary. I was in Bettendorf for 12 years and completed my Educational Specialist degree, qualifying me for the position of Superintendent.

In 2022, I was offered the position of Superintendent for South Tama. I believe the opportunity for North Tama and South Tama to share a superintendent will be a great opportunity. I am looking forward to my North Tama tenure and the challenges that lie within.

As a shared superintendent, I anticipate I will be extremely busy. Meeting many of you throughout the coming school year at community events and school activities will be a goal of mine. Our construction project is exciting for the District as well as the community. We have a lot to look forward to and be excited about! I am eager to get the 2024-2025 school year started. Thank you for taking the time to read a little about me. Go Redhawks!
