Union students achieve academic excellence first semester

LA PORTE CITY – Union Community School District middle school and high school students achieved impressive academic success during the first semester of the 2024-25 school year.

Union Middle School (UMS) students averaged a 3.23 GPA, while Union High School (UHS) students averaged a 3.14 GPA. Nearly half (49%) of UMS students and more than half (56.2%) of UHS students earned a GPA of 3.33 or higher, placing them on the honor roll. Additionally, five UMS students and 41 UHS students achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA.

FAST scores show that 66% of middle school students are proficient in English Language Arts, and 79% are proficient in math. These percentages greatly exceed the average scores in Central Rivers AEA and the entire state of Iowa. A total of 92% of UMS students are passing all courses.

At UHS, 12.1% of students improved their GPA by 0.5 points or more compared to their spring 2024 GPA. Furthermore, 22% of high school students belong to the A-Team, a group of students who maintain all A grades or A- grades. Overall, 56.9% of UHS students achieved academic excellence.

“I am incredibly proud of our middle school and high school students,” Superintendent John Howard said. “This data reflects how hard our students have been working and how dedicated our staff is. Together, they have achieved impressive results, and I look forward to what they will accomplish next.”
