Union Teacher Selected as Capturing Kids’ Hearts Trainer

DYSART — Union Middle School teacher Laurie Driscol has been selected as a summer trainer for Capturing Kids’ Hearts (CKH), a national program focused on improving school culture and student engagement.

Driscol was chosen for her leadership on the school’s CKH Process Champions team and for her instruction of the LeadWorthy course, which emphasizes leadership, professionalism, and team-building skills. As a trainer, she will lead other school districts as they implement the CKH framework.

Union Middle School was named a National Showcase School for the 2024-25 school year. The school formed a Process Champions team to support its continued work with CKH, with Driscol playing a central role.

“I am extremely grateful that Laurie took the opportunity to take on the LeadWorthy course and challenge,” Principal Wayne Slack said. “Changing curriculum after teaching something else for many years is not easy and a ton of work. Her willingness to do this with fidelity has had an extremely large impact on our school culture. I am excited for Laurie – she now has the chance to spread the passion she has for this program with other districts throughout the country.”

Driscol’s selection followed an onsite visit from a CKH strategist, who observed her work and encouraged her to apply. The application process included coaching sessions, out-of-state training, and in-depth preparation. Finalists are asked to co-lead training sessions with other schools across the country.

“I am extremely proud of Laurie, not only for her work with Capturing Kids’ Hearts at Union Middle School, but also for embracing the challenge of becoming a trainer,” Superintendent John Howard said. “She worked extremely hard during the process, and her efforts were rewarded. She will be an excellent addition to the CKH staff this summer, and the experience she gains will positively impact our students and staff.”
