LA PORTE CITY – The Union Community School District’s proposed property tax levy rate for fiscal year 2027 is 3.18% lower than the previous year.

The proposed rate of $11.404 per $1,000 of taxable property value for FY27 continues a trend of declining rates at Union CSD in recent years. The district’s projected levy will mark a 7% decline since FY22, and it will be below the rate that was in place back in 2004.

“As a board, we take our responsibility to taxpayers very seriously, and the fact that our district’s property tax rate is lower today than it was more than two decades ago is something our entire community should be proud of,” Board President Ben Schemmel said.

The FY27 rate will also be lower than Union CSD’s average annual levy since 2004, which has been $12.177.

“The fact that the district’s property tax rate is lower today than 23 years ago reflects decades of thoughtful planning, responsible budgeting, and a commitment to balancing educational excellence with respect for our taxpayers,” Superintendent John Howard said. “That balance is not easy to achieve, and it speaks to years of careful leadership and community support.”
