LA PORTE CITY – The Union Community School District has received an “A” rating as it prepares to issue $10.5 million of school infrastructure sales, services, and use tax revenue bonds.
The long-term rating was designated by S&P Global of Chicago. When issued, the bonds will be repaid with funds that Union CSD receives from the state’s Secure an Advanced Vision for Education (SAVE) fund, rather than local property taxes.
S&P Global cited the district’s “very strong” economic fundamentals, low revenue volatility, strong local economy, and lack of outstanding general obligation bond debt among the reasons for its high ranking.
“This bond rating is a direct reflection of our district’s responsible financial stewardship and long-standing commitment to transparency and accountability,” said Union CSD Board President Ben Schemmel. “We are proud of the careful planning and disciplined decision making that have positioned our district for long-term stability.”
Bond proceeds will fund a series of infrastructure improvements across all campuses.
The largest project will be heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system upgrades at Union High School. The north and south parking areas at the school will be paved, multiple sections of the roof will be replaced, the fire alarm system will be updated, and other building improvements will be made.
Expected projects at Union Middle School, Dysart-Geneseo Elementary School, and La Porte City Elementary School include HVAC upgrades, roof repairs and replacements, interior improvements, restroom enhancements to meet accessibility requirements, concrete repairs, and a playground surface refurbishment.
“Strong financial management allows us to maximize resources to enhance our schools while also planning responsibly for the future,” said Superintendent John Howard. “We remain committed to maintaining this high standard so we can continue delivering excellent opportunities and outcomes for Union students and families.”
