Union rides into homecoming on heels of 50-6 win

Following a two-hour drive to Friday night’s game, you can imagine the Union Knights were a bit anxious to take the field. But even the most active imagination couldn’t have predicted the thrashing that would ensue.

Union dashed to a 50-0 halftime lead and coasted the rest of the way, beating Central Springs on the road 50-6 last week. The contest marked the first Class 2A District 3 game of the season for the Knights, and proved to be a nice tune-up heading into homecoming this week.

Quarterback Jay Scheel ran for 142 yards, including a 98-yard touchdown run for the Knights’ first touchdown of the game. Scheel had three rushing touchdowns on the day to go along with his lone touchdown through the air. He was 6-of-9 for 107 yards in the passing game.

Trev Hadachek punched it in three times, rushing for 52 yards and recording a reception for 40 yards. Andrew Osuna and Kolton Bader has 35 and 20 yards, respectively, in the running game. Will Crees caught the lone Union touchdown through the air, one of his three catches on the day for a total of 48 yards.

Crees also recorded a sack on the defensive end, one of his six total tackles. Tedd Schmitz also had six tackles, including one for a loss. Tyler Fischels picked off a pass in the contest.

The Knights will look to keep their winning streak alive when they host Osage for homecoming this Friday. Osage followed up two close wins to open the season with a loss to St. Ansgar, an impressive and still- undefeated squad out of Class 1A. Gametime is set for 7:30 p.m., with the crowning of the homecoming queen at halftime.
