Thomsens bring home state wrestling titles at 126, 152
The Thomsen brothers have wrestled their way to the top of the pack, capping off a week in Des Moines with Class 2A state titles at 126 and 152 pounds.
Max Thomsen, a sophomore, breezed through the earlier rounds before winning a hard-fought championship match against Kyle White of Central Springs. Thomsen finished the year with a 49-0 record and scored a takedown in the first period of the championship match, notching a 3-1 victory and his second state title in his two seasons.
Thomsen won the title at 113 in his freshman season at Union, and moved up to 120 this year.
His brother, Logan, won his first title in three attempts after finishing as the runner-up the past two years. Logan wrestled at 152 pounds and lost just one match all year. He defeated Jackson VanKirk of Perry with a 16-0 match won by technical fall.
This marks the first time two Union wrestlers have won championships in the same season since Bart Mehlert and Trey Clark won titles at 140 and 189 in 2000.
The Knights finished fourth in the state as a team, tallying 81 points. Josh Clark, who wrestled at 285 this year and was ranked #2 in the state, finished third with a 5-0 decision over Sean Eadler of Assumption. Clark was 45-7 on the season.
Jacob Holschlag also scored points for the Knights with his fourth-place finish at 145 pounds. Holschlag lost a tough 3-1 decision in the consolation match.
Austin Dengler had a tougher time at 138 pounds, falling to John Morkel of Independence.
