Knights air it out in 37-13 win over A-P

Union quarterback Jay Scheel did most of the scoring work in week one with his legs. This week, he used his arm.

Scheel threw for four touchdowns-three of which went to Dylan Bear-in the Knights’ 37-13 victory over Aplington-Parkersburg on Friday night in La Porte City.

Scheel, who finished the game 7-for-11 with 176 yards through the air, was mistake-free as the Knights cruised to an easy victory over their Class 1A challengers.

A seven-yard throw to Bear on Union’s opening drive set the tone, with Scheel again connecting with Bear after an A-P touchdown to give the Knights a 17-7 edge. Union closed out the half with another Scheel-Bear touchdown pass to go up 31-7 heading into the locker room.

Bear finished the day with four receptions and 142 yards and three touchdowns. Jacob Holschlag led the Knights’ ground attack with 76 rushing yards on 16 attempts. Scheel ran for 31 yards.

Brady Driscol and Tate Hadachek both snagged interceptions on the defensive end, and Eskild Eriksen converted on a 30-yard field goal attempt in the first half.

Nathan Harting also returned a blocked punt for a an 11-yard touchdown in the first half of play.

The Knights head into this Friday’s home contest against Central Springs (1-1) with a solid start to the season under their belts. Central Springs fell 41-14 to Lake Mills last week. Kickoff for Friday’s game is set for 7:30 p.m.
