Records fall as Union rolls to 3-0

Jay Scheel lit up the scoreboard and etched his name in the Union record books during the Knights’ 61-6 victory over Central Springs on Friday night.

Scheel threw for six touchdowns, a Union record, and ran for another, giving him the individual game record for most throwing touchdowns and most total touchdowns with seven. Scheel was nearly flawless in the passing game, going 12-for-14 on 225 yards passing. His longest TD throw of the day was for 43 yards to Kolton Bader.

Bader led the Knights with 111 yards receiving and three touchdowns, while Dylan Bear followed up his impressive performance against A-P with 44 yards and two touchdowns against Central Springs.

Brady Driscol caught for 39 yards and a touchdown, and Tate Hadachek snagged two passes for 31 yards.

Jacob Holschlag led the Knights’ ground attack with 85 yards and a touchdown, and Scheel also rushed five times for 46 yards and a TD. Noah Garwood ran for 31 yards and a touchdown.

The Union defense was also key in the decisive and record-setting victory, tying an all-time team record with five interceptions as a unit.

Driscol intercepted two passes and made the most of his defensive opportunities with 70 return yards off interceptions. Bear, Garwood and Justin Carey accounted for the other Union pickoffs.

Holschlag led the defense up front with a team-high eight tackles, including two for a loss, and a sack.

Union will take its high-octane offense on the road for a date with hapless Osage this Friday, September 20. Osage is currently 0-3 with its closest loss coming by ten points to Crestwood in the season’s opening week.

Union returns home for a contest with Cascade on September 27 which will serve as Homecoming. Kickoff for both games is set for 7:30 p.m.
