7th & 8th Reserves Battle A-P

The Union 7th ‘B’ and 8th ‘B’ boys basketball teams played their first home contests against the Aplington-Parkersburg Falcons in UMS gymnasium. The 8th grade could not overcome a sluggish first quarter as they lost 28-34. The Knights improved their defense the second half but could not overtake the Falcons. The team shot 35% from the field by making 11 of 31 shots. They shot 67% from the freethrow line by making 6 of 9. Troy Hanus lead the Knights with 13 points. He was followed by Kyle Brustkern with 8, Payton Hellman with 4, Hunter Klima with 2, and Lucas Piper with 1. Nick Vogeler and Brustkern were the leading rebounders.

The 7th grade had trouble getting their offense rolling and fell to the Falcons 10-40. The team made 5 of 17 field goals to shoot only 29%. Scoring for the Knights were: Kade Short with 4, Aiden Wilson, Ryan Sedgwick, and Zeb Wiederin with two each. Short lead the team in rebounding with 5 followed by Alex Kiler and Wiederin with 4 each.

7-8th Boys Drop Opener

The Union 7th and 8th boys basketball teams traveled to Hudson to open their 2013-14 season and came away empty-handed as the 8th grade lost 45-53 and the 7th grade bowed 17-52. In the 8th grade game, the Pirates used a strong 3rd quarter to expand their slim half-time lead and held on in the 4th quarter to seal the win. The Knights were lead in scoring by Jace Glenn with 19 points. He was followed by Koby Alpers with 12, Troy Hanus with 4, Carter Brehm, Kyle Brustkern, and Tate Hookham with 2 each, and Nick Vogeler with 1 point. The team shot 54% from the field and 40% from the freethrow line but that good shooting was negated by the Pirates getting second and third shots behind strong rebounding.

In the 7th grade game, the Knights battled against an exceptionally tall Hudson team. After scoring 12 first quarter points, the Knights offense was only allowed 5 points the rest of the game. The team shot 26% by making only 7 of 27 shots. They made 3 of 11 freethrows. Silver Schmitz lead the team in scoring by netting 6 points. Carter Asmussen add 4 points while Nolan Havran chipped in 3 and Bryce Parker had 2. Schmitz also lead the team in rebounding with 8. In the reserve game, Hunter Klima scored 5 points and Richie Arteaga had 3. The Pirates won the reserve contest 14-8.
