Union girls win four straight, sit at 11-7 overall

The Union girls are on a roll. Winners of four straight and five of their last six games (as of Tuesday), the girls have relied on the steady scoring of senior Breann Bader as well as strong performances from several underclassmen.

In a 46-29 victory over Aplington-Parkersburg on January 24, Bader scored 16 and freshman Courtney Powell added 15, with junior Morgan Phillips also scoring in double digits with 10 points.

A 46-44 win over Jesup the following day also saw three Knights in double figures: Bader with 11, Powell with 10 and freshman Jackie Barz with 10. Phillips had a team-high four rebounds.

The January 28 contest against Wapsie Valley was a bit more one-sided, with the Knights outscoring the opposition 36-22 in the second half en route to a 64-37 victory. Bader led the team with 16 points.

A 43-33 victory over Columbus Catholic closed out January for the Knights, who were led by Kaylee Sherwood’s 13-point effort. Phillips grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, and Bader had a team-high eight assists.

The girls now sit at 11-7 on the year and have the benefit of two more home games to close out the regular season. Union faces Hudson on Friday, February 7 and South Tama on Monday, February 10.
