Seven Union wrestlers headed to state tourney
Seven Union athletes – the most in a decade – are headed to the state wrestling tournament after impressive district performances.
Derek Holschlag (40-6) took first place at the district match in Marion with a victory over Nick Meling of East Marshall and will represent the Knights at 106 pounds.
Ryder Albertsen (29-12) earned a second-place finish with a win over Tony Garcia of Mount Vernon at 120 pounds.
Undefeated two-time state champion Max Thomsen (45-0) breezed through the 138-pound bracket with a win over Max Upah of East Marshall in the final. Thomsen will face Chase Wyant of Van Meter at the state meet.
At 145 pounds, Trevor McLaughlin (44-3) also finished first with a 10-5 decision over Aaron Schultz of Williamsburg.
Cole Reiter (36-12) won his second-place match over Noah Dalstrom of Mount Vernon at 152 pounds.
Jacob Holschlag (44-1) will represent Union at 160 pounds after a victory over Vic Malloy of Williamsburg, and Jace Hadachek (38-7) beat Dalton Vest of South Tama for the first-place slot in the 195-pound bracket.
Wrestlers will compete for the state title this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, February 20-22 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. For scheduling information, visit www.iahssa.org/wrestling.
