Girls earn high praise for skills on the court
Several Union girls basketball players were recently recognized for their accomplishments both on the court and in the classroom.
Senior Breann Bader was honored as a First Team All-Conference performer after leading the Knights in scoring with 14.4 points per game.
“Being selected to the first team is a well-deserved honor for Breann as she has spent countless hours in the gym to develop her game,” Head Coach Robert Driscol said. “She has had a good career helping the varsity team go 60-29 the last four years along with two conference championships. It’s nice to see that she is able to be recognized for the year she had.”
Bader was also named to the IGCA Class 3A Northeast All-District team and will participate in the Iowa Girls Coaches Association All-Star game on April 5. The contest tips off at noon at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
Freshman Courtney Powell was also recognized for her efforts with a Second Team All-Conference selection. Powell was second on the team with 7.5 points per game and also led the team with 67 assists and 57 steals. “It is never easy to be a freshman playing at the varsity level, but Courtney more than held her own as she had a nice freshman year,” Driscol said. “Her speed and quickness make her a fun player to coach and watch. I look forward to watching her skills develop over the next few years.”
Junior Morgan Phillips was named as an Honorable Mention All-Conference player after leading the team with 6.6 rebounds per game. Phillips also averaged 4 points per game.
“I’m very proud of Morgan’s performance this year,” Driscol said. “Morgan had a change in positions from guard to post this year and handled the transition well. Although she was undersized at the post, her hustle, effort, and aggressiveness helped her have a good year for us.”
In addition to their work on the court, three girls were named to the Academic All-Conference team after maintaining a 3.33 or above GPA during the academic year. Bader, Phillips and Tessa Reiter all earned these honors.
