Union, Jesup split

The Union and Jesup baseball teams split a doubleheader on June 16/17 by the scores of 5-3 and 6-5.

In game one, Jesup scored lone runs in the first, third and fifth innings. The Knights scored two in the first and three more in the sixth. Carey lead the game off with a single, moved to second on a sac bunt by Holschlag and then scored on a triple by Tecklenburg. Tecklenburg would then score on a sac fly by Barz. In the sixth, Carey would again get things started when he was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a sac bunt by Holschlag and scored on a single by Tecklenburg to tie the game. Barz would then rip a double to score Tecklenburg to help the Knights take the lead. Jace Glenn, who was running for Barz, would later score on a double by Lambe to provide some insurance for starter Ted Tecklenburg.

Tecklenburg threw a complete game giving up just two runs on nine hits while striking out six with no walks to earn the win.

In game two, Union scored a lone run in the second to take an early lead. Dylan Stech drew a walk and later scored on a passed ball. Jesup responded by scoring two runs in the top of the third before lightening would postpone the game to the following night. The game was continued the following night and Jesup would tack on one more run in the third to take a 3-1 lead. Jesup would score three more in the fourth to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Union scored two in the bottom of the fourth to make it a game once again. Lambe lead the inning off with a double which was followed by singles by Stech and Kiler. Lambe and Stech would both score in the inning.

Justin Carey relieved Union starter Alex Barz in the seventh by striking out the side. In the bottom of the seventh, Carey got things going by leading off with a single and stole second. Holschlag followed with a single of his own. Tecklenburg’s fielder’s choice would score Carey to close the gap to 6-4. Barz reached on a fielder’s choice and later scored on a Cael Lambe single. Unfortunately for the Knights, the game also ended on this play as a base runner was caught in a run down to end the game.

Carey, Holschlag, Tecklenburg (2), Sells, Lambe (2), Stech, and Kiler all collected hits for the Knights.

Barz suffered the loss on the mound.

Union is now 6-5 in the conference and 6-11 overall.
