Man arrested after Christmas crash

An Illinois man faces several charges, including drunk driving, after rolling his vehicle on Highway 63 Christmas day.

Martin Mendoza, 21, of Elgin, Illinois, was seen driving through town at speeds of more than 100 mph early Thursday morning, around 8 a.m. His vehicle rolled near the intersection of Highway 63 and M Avenue, where he abandoned it before deputies from the Tama County Sheriff’s Office arrived.

According to reports, Mendoza ran to a nearby farm house, where he was detained by a citizen after the man smelled alcohol on him. Mendoza stated that he needed to get money and a cellphone from his car, and eventually got free and fled on foot.

Local authorities searched for Mendoza and found him around noon, where he was treated for cuts and bruises before being taken to the Tama County Jail. A State Patrol aircraft on its way to Des Moines helped located Mendoza. He faces several charges including second-offense OWI.
