Baseball wraps up regular season with win
Denver falls 11-5 at the hands of Union
Union beat Denver on Thursday 11-5 in seven innings.
The Knights scored three runs in the sixth on an RBI double by Cael Lambe and a two-run single by Austin Kiler.
Lambe racked up three RBIs on two hits for the Knights.
Even though Justin Carey allowed five runs over six innings he still recorded the victory. He struck out 10, walked four and surrendered seven hits.
Bo McMahon was charged with the loss. He allowed six runs in two innings, walked four and struck out one.
Union jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Alex Barz singled to ignite Knights’ offense. Lambe singled, scoring Derek Holschlag and Carey. Union added more runs when Glenn scored on an RBI single by Koby Alpers.
Denver quickly matched the Knights’ strong inning with a three-run inning of its own in the first. Denver scored on an RBI single by Blake Deutmeyer, an RBI single by McMahon, and a sacrifice fly by Tanner Vohsman.
Union never surrendered the lead after the second inning, scoring three runs on two doubles.
The Knights piled on two more runs in the top of the third. A ground out scored Kiler to get the Knights on the board in the inning. That was followed up by Carey’s single, bringing home Alpers.
Union is 18-12 overall and 15-6 in the NICL East which earns a second place finish to the season.
Union falls behind in seventh inning in 7-6 loss to Vinton
The Knights lost the ballgame after losing the lead in the seventh inning Wednesday, as Vinton grabbed a 7-6 victory in seven innings.
Alex Barz put himself in scoring position with two extra-base hits for Knights. He doubled in the first and fifth innings.
Scottie Wirth got it done on the rubber on the way to a win. He pitched two-thirds shutout innings. Wirth struck out none, walked one and gave up no hits.
Derek Holschlag was charged with the loss. He allowed seven runs in six innings, walked three and struck out five.
The Knights jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Holschlag got things going for Union with a single. A single by Justin Carey then moved Holschlag from first to second. The Knights pushed more runs across when Carey scored on an RBI double by Alex Barz.
It didn’t take long for Vinton to answer as it scored four runs of its own in the first. Vinton scored on an error, a sacrifice fly by Aaron Henderson, an RBI triple by Wirth, and a fielder’s choice.
Vinton went up for good in the seventh, scoring one run on two singles.
Union is 17-12 overall and 14-6 in the NICL.
Union plays Benton Community in a first round district match up at Benton on Friday, July 17 at 7:00.
Union falls to Vinton 8-3
Wes Edwards got the win for Vinton. He allowed three runs over seven innings. Edwards struck out none, walked two and gave up nine hits.
Vinton’s Nathan Struve, Aaron Henderson and Tyler Rippel combined for six hits and four RBIs.
Cael Lambe took the loss for the Knights. He allowed eight runs in six innings, walked two and struck out one.
The bottom of the first saw Vinton take an early lead, 1-0.
The game was never in doubt after the second, as Vinton scored two runs on two sacrifice flys.
Vinton tacked on another three runs in the fourth. A single by Struve ignited the offense,, plating Austin Bohnsack. That was followed up by Henderson’s single, scoring Struve.
A one-run sixth inning helped bring the Knights within five. A sacrifice fly byAustin Kiler fueled the Knights’ comeback.
One run in the top of the seventh helped the Knights close its deficit to 8-3. An RBI single by Justin Carey gave Union life, but a groundouts ended the game.
