Four named to All-Conf. softball squad
The Union Knights Softball team capped off the 2015 season with four selections to the NICL East All-Conference teams. The Knights finished with an overall record of 14-14 and 8-6 in the conference, tying for third place with Denver. Columbus and Jesup finished ahead of the Knights.
Sophomore pitcher Peyton Parker was named to the first team as a utility player. She had 14 wins and 14 losses on the mound. Peyton had 154 strikeouts on the year, which ranks her in the top ten in class 3A. She is the top 3A Sophomore pitcher for strikeouts. Her ERA was 1.79, allowing just 24 walks on the year in 184 innings pitched. She also batted .418 with a slugging percentage of .637, including 7 triples(tied for 1st in the state in class 3A and 3rd in all classes), 3 doubles, 1 homerun, 24 RBI’s, and only struck out 5 times in 99 at bats. She also had a .978 Fielding Percentage, while committing just 2 errors on 92 chances.
Sophomore shortstop Kaitlin Holshlag, was named to the second team as a utility player. Kaitlin batted .436 and lead the team in hits (44), stolen bases (4), and tied in doubles (3). She had 12 RBI’s and 3 walks, while only striking out 5 times in 104 at bats. She was the Knights leadoff hitter this year. She also had a .908 Fielding Percentage, while committing just 8 errors in 86 chances at a tough fielding position as a shortstop.
Sophomore Justine Nagel, was named as the second team 1st baseman. She had a .982 fielding percentage while making many great stops and stretches at 1st base. She only had 4 errors all year with 13 assists, 210 putouts on 227 chances. Justine batted .301 with 25 hits, scoring 19 runs, 2 doubles, 8 RBI’s, and 7 walks.
Sophomore Jordyn Nagel, was named as the second team catcher. She had a .989 fielding percentage while playing in one of the toughest positions as a catcher. She had 2 errors with 14 assists, 161 putouts on 177 chances . Jordyn threw out 6 out of 12 runners trying to steal second base. She had 12 hits, scored 11 runs, 7 RBI’s and 10 walks.
Senior Kaylee Sherwood was selected as honorable mention. She batted .296, with 21 hits, 16 RBI, 10 walks, and an on base percentage of .390. She played on the varsity for 5 years for the Knights, starting most of them at 3rd base the last 4 years. She had a steady glove at 3rd base and was a strong hitter for the Knights.
