McCann to speak on new book March 14

Linda Betsinger McCann will be speaking at the La Porte City Library on Tuesday, March 14 at 6 pm about her newest book, The Civilian Conservation Corps in Northeast Iowa. Everyone is invited and there is no admission charge. She will have copies of all her books with her.

The CCC was a federal program during the 1930s that helped young men find work, and also renewed our natural resources. The men left their homes and lived in camps and worked in our state parks and also did soil erosion work. There were camps in Belle Plaine and Marion for soil erosion. Backbone, Beeds, and Pine lake all had dams and buildings constructed by the CCC men. Linda was able to speak with seven men who were enrolled in the CCC and shares their stories.

Linda is now finishing a book for the southeast portion of the state and their CCC work. She has begun working on the central part of the state. There will be five books to cover the state and the CCC. Linda’s books are published by The Iowan books. The CCC book is her tenth book.

Linda would enjoy hearing from men who worked in the CCC, or families who had men that were enrolled. She can be reached at losttownsofiowa@gmail.com
