Chuck Grassley will seek eighth Senate term in 2022

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa)

U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley will run for re-election in 2022, he announced early Friday [in a tweet].

“It’s 4 a.m. in Iowa so I’m running. I do that 6 days a week. Before I start the day I want you to know what Barbara and I have decided. I’m running for re-election–a lot more to do, for Iowa. We ask and will work for your support. Will you join us?”

Grassley will be 89 at the beginning of his term, if elected. It would be his eighth consecutive term in the U.S. Senate.

Polling in Iowa shows voters would support Grassley’s decision to run again, regardless of his age. A September Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll found voters preferred Grassley over Democratic opponent Abby Finkenauer by 18 percentage points.

Iowa Republicans rallied around Grassley in the wake of the announcement.

“(Grassley) delivers for Iowa every single day. I am so proud to support his campaign for another term in the United States Senate!” tweeted Gov. Kim Reynolds.

“No one works harder for Iowa than my grandpa,” tweeted Iowa House Speaker Pat Grassley. “With the chaos in Washington, we need Chuck Grassley now more than ever.”

Several hours after the initial announcement, the Grassley campaign Twitter published a jaunty campaign ad with clips of the senator eating at Dairy Queen and pulling two lawn mowers behind him on a tractor. In the final moments of the video, it reads, “The senator that we have is the senator we need.”
