Iowa Auditor of State Rob Sand visited Dysart City Hall on Friday, November 12 to hand-deliver a pie to city leaders in recognition of their Public Innovations and Efficiencies (PIE) Award. Dysart tied with the city of Wilton for most improved city by more than doubling its number of efficiency measures from 2019-2020. Seventy-nine counties and 267 cities took part in the PIE process, according to a press release from the auditor’s office. Partaking in the pie consumption with Sand on Friday afternoon — a pumpkin pie made locally by Lisa Wociak of rural Dysart — was Mayor Tim Glenn, council member Mary Wankowicz, and city clerk Tabby Kaiser. In Dysart’s 2020 PIE survey submitted by Kaiser, some of the cost cutting measures implemented by the city include shutting off the lights to reduce energy costs, using natural light wherever possible, reducing printing by using electronic pdfs wherever possible, having EnergyStar qualified computers, and sealing air leaks in doors, walls, and roofs. “Most improved is kind of a big deal,” Sand said before tucking into a piece of pumpkin pie alongside Mayor Glenn. The auditor noshed on pie and chatted with city leaders for about 30 minutes as part of the ceremony before heading to his next PIE stop.
