Harvest on the horizon

As area farmers begin to prepare equipment for harvest, those lucky enough to take a scenic drive this week across the Tama County countryside will see signs of the approaching seasonal shift every which way they look. Fields are beginning to turn shades of saffron and gold from the corn to the beans. Drivers are thus reminded to practice patience on the roads this fall as farmers head out to those fields, and perhaps ponder the words of the late Iowan Aldo Leopold while doing so: “There are two spiritual dangers in not owning a farm. One is the danger of supposing that breakfast comes from the grocery, and the other that heat comes from the furnace.”
