On a truly beautiful night for outdoor sports, both Union and North Tama competed at the Sam Iverson XC Invitational in Grundy Center on Thursday, Sept. 22 with runners from both girls’ teams taking home top-10 finishes.

The meet featured 14 competitive girls’ teams including 2A No. 7 Denver and 1A No. 8 Hudson which took first and second, respectively overall.

Union finished in eighth place with 215 points, while North Tama came in just behind the Knights with 223 points for ninth place.

Both teams boasted a top-10 finish. Union’s Amilia Condon finished in eighth place with a time of 20:32.70, while Redhawk Grace Lidgett crossed a few paces behind Condon in ninth place with a time of 20:42.67, a season-best. The girls’ varsity 5K winner was Hillary Trainor of Sumner-Fredericksburg – currently ranked No. 4 in Class 2A – who crossed the finish line with a time of 19:22.29.

On Facebook, North Tama head coach Katey Holbach praised Monat’s continued improvement work this season, writing after the meet, “Case wrapped up the night for the Redhawks with [a] season PR [personal record] and shaved 1:19 from his previous best. It isn’t easy being the lone [high school] boy on that start line, but Case takes on the challenge and represents well!”

As of Week 5 (Sept. 18-24) Union’s Lauren Youngblut was ranked No. 19 in Class 2A and Condon was ranked No. 25.

North Tama’s Lidgett – who won the BGM XC Meet earlier in the week on Monday for the third year running – was ranked No. 11 in Class 1A in the Week 5 rankings.

The Redhawks are next set to run on Saturday, October 1 at Pine Lake Country Club in Edora in South Hardin’s annual cross country meet.

After competing in the Jesup Cross Country Invite on Tuesday and the Bobcat Invite in Western Dubuque on Thursday, the Union Knights will round out the week by running the Homecoming game ball Friday from Dysart to La Porte City.

Both the Knights and Redhawks are set to compete on Tuesday, October 4 in Dike at Fox Ridge Golf Course for the annual cross-country run hosted by Dike-New Hartford.
