Knights drop Huskies 51-39 in stunning regional opening round

The Union Knights girls basketball team notched an impressive win over Oelwein last Saturday evening in the opening round of regional play, taking down the Huskies 51-39.

The Class 3A Region 3 quarterfinal was absolutely the host Huskies’ to lose and lose they did following a first quarter that opened with not a single Oelwein point on the board for more than half the quarter.

The Knights led all four quarters and showed what a truly talented team they are despite a record of 5-18 this season that would seem to say otherwise. Two of those five wins were against the Huskies (11-12) with the Knights also beating the Oelwein team, 61-51, on Feb. 7.

On Saturday, junior Reagan Sorensen led the offense for the Knights with 25 points – four of those 3-pointers – and four assists, while sophomore Lily Lorenzen and junior Ava Mills both notched 9 points apiece. Mills led the defense with seven rebounds and four steals. Junior Brigitte Rohrer also had seven boards.

While the Knights had plenty of turnovers – 18 – the Huskies logged 22 turnovers.

The Union Knights head to round two of the postseason this week, facing their neighbor and formidable rival Benton Community which boasts a 19-3 record this season.

The Class 3A Region 3 semifinal was set for Wednesday, Feb, 15 in Van Horne with tipoff at 7 p.m.
