Union/North Tama soccer takes on Decorah at home

Following an arduous loss 4-0 to the ninth-ranked Denver Cyclones on the road May 1, the Union/North Tama girls soccer team roared back on May 4 with a scrappy overtime win at home, 6-4, over the Decorah Vikings.

With nine minutes remaining, the Knights were down 0-2 to Decorah. Summoning “true grit and determination,” in the words of head coach John Simon on Facebook, the team “dug deep” and scored twice – courtesy of Knights Molly Grote and Molly Clark – to send the game into overtime.

Following two scoreless overtime periods, the teams entered into a penalty kick round during which the Knights vaquished the Vikings for the win.

Penalty kicks were scored by Molly Clark, Addie Pospisil, Ava Monat and Dena Robb.

During the game against Decorah, freshmen Emily Anton and Addison Hochstetler notched an assist apiece, while keeper Dacey Powell made 20 saves.

Powell continues to dominate across all classes this season for number of saves, moving from third in the state to second. As of Monday this week, Powell sat at 244 saves total on the season, just behind Keelyn Griffin of Wapello with 250.

This week, the Knights (4-8) are set to play their final regular season games including a road game Thursday against Columbus Catholic (8-5) in Waterloo, and Friday at home against No. 12 Class 2A Marion (9-1). Friday’s kickoff is set for 5 p.m.

Next week, first round regionals begin on Monday (May 15).
