‘America the Beautiful’
Legion members, UHS band participate in area Memorial Day services
DYSART – Members of Dysart’s Myers-Gordy-Pippert American Legion Post 335 along with high school bugler Elizabeth Lampe of Garrison and a contingent of the Union High School Band under the direction of Michael Bistline solemnly paraded down two blocks of Dysart’s Main Street on Monday morning just after 10:30 a.m. as part of the community’s annual Memorial Day observances. Leading the parade under a very grey sky and amid scattered raindrops were (pictured, front row, from left) Legionnaires Kevin Eikamp, Robert Glenn, Ken Tanner, Legion Commander Fred Koch, and Billie Van Egmond. After processing for two blocks, the parade paused in front of the fire station where a crowd was waiting. Director Bistline then led the band in a skillfully-performed rendition of “America the Beautiful” before the group departed for Dysart Cemetery by bus for the final remembrance/flag service of the day. Earlier that morning, Dysart Legionnaires along with Lampe visited four area rural cemeteries including Houghton-Sawyer Cemetery, Gnagy Cemetery, Rampton Cemetery, and Saint Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. In Clutier, members of Hora-Machacek Legion Post 453 under Commander Richard Wiebbecke (pictured saluting after placing a flag on a veteran’s grave) also conducted remembrance/flag services at several rural cemeteries including Clutier, Oneida, Holy Trinity, St. Wenceslaus, and National Cemetery. Last week, members of Clutier’s Legion Auxiliary cleaned and readied both crosses and trellises for placement on deceased Legion and Auxiliary members’ graves, respectively.
