TRAER – The Traer Historical Museum held its annual meeting and ice cream social on Thursday, April 10, at the museum in downtown Traer.
President George Kadrmas presided over the informal gathering which took place ahead of the business meeting.
The featured speaker this year was Grant Veeder, retired Black Hawk County Auditor and aficionado of the Civil War-era connection between Abraham Lincoln, Tama County, and the State of Iowa. His presentation “Lincoln and the Hawkeye State” included information regarding President Lincoln’s 1854 ownership of land north of Toledo. A marker commemorating his ownership has been placed on US 63 to that effect. The informative talk lasted approximately 30 minutes.
Following Veeder’s presentation, Kadrmas honored Don Stansbery for receiving a Governor’s Volunteer Award. Stansbery has worked tirelessly at various organizations in Traer including the American Legion Kubik-Finch Post 142 and the Hesperia Masonic Lodge as well as at the museum.
Sharon Stoakes recognized museum volunteers after which an ice cream bar with toppings and homemade cookies were enjoyed by the nearly 50 people present.
