‘The Eucharist draws us together, even across generations’

St. Wenceslaus celebrates Feast of Corpus Christi, marks 125th anniversary with Archbishop Thomas Zinkula

Archbishop Thomas Zinkula (under the canopy, center), the 11th Archbishop of Dubuque, bears the Holy Eucharist during the Feast of Corpus Christi on Sunday, June 22, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Oratory in rural Clutier after departing St. Vaclav Cemetery’s north chapel. Archbishop Zinkula was invited by parishioner John Svoboda to join Rev. Anthony ‘Father Tony’ Boahen Nketiah (not pictured) in leading the annual celebration as part of St. Wenceslaus Church’s 125th anniversary. Also pictured, canopy bearers Shannon Svoboda front left, Tony Dudys (back left), Jeremy Monat (back right), and Scott Monat (front right); altar servers William Dudys (leading the canopy) and Lucy Monat (behind her dad, Scott Monat); and Todd Harmsen (wearing sunglasses, center of canopy). Vernon, Iowa, presides over Catholic Mass on Sunday, June 22, inside the sanctuary of St. Wenceslaus (Vaclav) Oratory in rural Clutier as part of the Feast of Corpus Christi. Despite the sweltering temperatures outside hovering in the mid-90s, the climate inside the full oratory was comfortable. During the service, Archbishop Zinkula told the congregation, “The Eucharist draws us together, even across generations. .. Today we don’t just commemorate a past, we proclaim a future. … In the words of Saint Wenceslaus himself, ‘But seek what is good for all the people and always walk in the way of the Word.’ Happy 125th anniversary. Christ is here. Christ is with us.” PHOTO BY RUBY F. MCALLISTER

Brothers (l-r) Jack, Asher, and Auggie Monat play with colorful ribbon banners as fierce south-southwest winds whip around them Sunday morning outside St. Wenceslaus Catholic Oratory. The wild winds, sustained at 20 mph with gusts in the mid-30s, managed to break the front right corner of the vintage canopy that the Monats’ dad Jeremy and uncle Scott helped carry during the Feast of Corpus Christi procession later that morning.
