Step back in time this Sunday at La Porte City’s ‘Sip & Stroll’ Walking Tour

LA PORTE CITY – The La Porte City Historic Preservation Commission invites the community to discover the rich tapestry of rural Iowa history at the annual “Sip & Stroll” Walking Tour on Sunday, Sept. 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This unique community celebration transforms Main Street into an open-air museum where history comes alive through an engaging self-guided walking tour featuring 12 specially designed storyboards that chronicle the fascinating story of rural Iowa and La Porte City’s heritage.
“This event offers families a wonderful opportunity to connect with our shared past while enjoying a perfect autumn afternoon together,” said a spokesperson for the Historic Preservation Commission. “We’ve designed something for everyone – from history buffs to families with young children.”
Event Highlights
-Historical Walking Tour: Explore 12 captivating storyboards along Main Street that tell the
compelling story of rural Iowa life, from pioneer days to the present.
-Live Entertainment: Enjoy live music performances that will enhance the festive atmosphere throughout the afternoon.
-Vintage Vehicle Display: Marvel at an impressive collection of vintage cars, trucks, and tractors that showcase the evolution of rural transportation and agriculture.
-Hands-On History: Step into the past with spinning and weaving demonstrations in an authentic 1800s log cabin, offering visitors a glimpse into traditional crafts and daily life.
-Family Activities: Children will delight in special activities designed just for them, making this an ideal family outing.
-Historic Sites Tour: Visit the preserved jail house and fire station at the Rural Iowa Heritage Center for an up-close look at community history.
-Food and Refreshments: The FFA Historical & Ag Museum will host lunch, with wine and beer available for purchase to enhance your strolling experience.
The event is completely free to attend, with only food and beverages available for purchase. This accessibility ensures that all community members can participate in celebrating their local heritage.
