LA PORTE CITY – A bridge replacement project on the U.S. 218 bridge over Big Creek overflow that is 0.3 miles north of Black Hawk County Road D-48 La Porte City will begin on Monday, March 23, and continue through late September, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s New Hampton construction office.

Work will be done in two stages, always keeping half the bridge open to traffic. Traffic will be directed through the work zone and across the bridge by temporary traffic signals.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
