DES MOINES – The filing window for Iowa’s 2026 primary elections for state and federal offices closed Friday, March 13, at 5 p.m. Candidates who filed their Affidavit of Candidacy and nomination petitions in time will appear on the Tuesday, June 2, primary ballot for their respective parties.

Berleen Wobeter of rural Toledo filed to run in the Democratic primary for Iowa House District 53, submitting her paperwork on Friday, March 6, at the Iowa Secretary of State’s office. She was the only Democrat to file for the seat, while incumbent Rep. Dean Fisher was the only Republican to file. The district covers all of Poweshiek County and most of Tama County excluding the northeast corner; Clutier is part of the district, while Traer and Dysart are part of House District 76.

On Wednesday, March 18, Wobeter informed the newspaper she had subsequently withdrawn her Affidavit of Candidacy and will not appear on the primary ballot.

Wobeter previously ran for Tama County Supervisor in District 4 in 2024, where she narrowly lost a competitive race by 43 votes to Republican Mark Doland.

House District 76

In the race for House District 76 which includes Traer, Dysart and La Porte City, Republican incumbent Derek Wulf of rural Hudson and Democratic challenger Calvin Horn of Elk Run Heights were the only candidates to file for the June 2026 primary.

Senate District 27

In the race for Senate District 27 – which includes Grundy, Hardin, Poweshiek, parts of Tama, and parts of Black Hawk counties – incumbent Annette Sweeney of Iowa Falls will square off in the Republican primary against challenger Rocky Damiano, also of Iowa Falls.

According to a press release issued by Damiano’s campaign following his filing on March 9, the businessman is “running on a platform of defending property rights against eminent domain abuse, delivering strong conservative leadership for District 27, ending human trafficking, addressing water quality and rising cancer rates, and supporting small businesses.”

Damiano and his wife Karla own Nimrod Meats in Iowa Falls and have four children.

No Democratic candidate filed for the SD27 race.
