TRAER – The Traer American Legion Unit 142 held their monthly meeting April 22. Members gathered early to refurbish the containers that are set out at various businesses in Traer and Dysart in May as part of Poppy Month. The containers are used to collect funds through distribution of poppies to support veterans and also active-duty military personnel and their families with medical and financial needs. They are actually made by disabled veterans, Legion and Auxiliary members. The poppies symbolize the blood shed during battle.

May activities, observances

Monday, May 25, is Memorial Day. We encourage the public to contribute and wear a poppy proudly to honor the fallen and support the living who have worn our nation’s uniform.

This coming Wednesday, May 13, members Marguerite Hulme and Liz Bauch will distribute Poppy coloring books to the 4th graders at North Tama and tell them about the purpose of the poppies.

The following Wednesday, May 20, Little Miss Poppy and Traer Mayor Pete Holden will be downtown and visiting at Sunrise Hill.

On Friday and Saturday, May 22-23, our members will be at Hometown Foods.
