PHOTO COURTESY OF THE TRAER HISTORICAL MUSEUM

Old Settlers annual picnic in 1896. Northern Tama County was first settled in the late 1850s. Scottish families settled in western Perry and Crystal townships, while English and Irish settlers were common in Buckingham and Geneseo townships. A large number of the early settlers were born in the eastern United States. German and Czech settlers arrived a few years later.
