GLADBROOK — The Tama County Livestock and Fair Association recognized three outstanding honorees on Tuesday, July 14, with its 2026 Friend of the Fair Award, celebrating individuals and organizations whose dedication, service, and support have strengthened the Tama County Fair and its agricultural traditions.

Established in 1997, the Friend of the Fair Award honors individuals and businesses that have made significant contributions to the success of the Tama County Fair. The award serves as a way to recognize and thank those whose efforts, often behind the scenes, help make the fair possible year after year.

Matt Koester Recognized for Decades of Service

One of this year’s honorees, Matt Koester of Gladbrook, has spent decades quietly performing one of the fair’s most important jobs.

Since the 1990s, Koester has brought his International tractor to the fairgrounds and taken on the task of hauling and spreading manure from livestock areas. His efforts have helped ensure that fairgrounds are cleaned up properly after the event concludes, leaving the grounds ready for future use. Over the years, he has also assisted with fly and mosquito control, contributing to a cleaner and more comfortable environment for exhibitors and visitors alike.

While his work may not be highly visible, fair officials noted that it is essential to the successful operation of the fair.

“Matt works quietly and unassumingly, but completes a very important job for the fair,” organizers said while presenting him with a plaque in appreciation of his years of dedicated service.

State Bank of Toledo Honored for Longtime Partnership

State Bank of Toledo was also recognized as a 2026 Friend of the Fair for its longstanding financial support and community involvement.

Since the creation of the fair’s sponsorship program, the bank has consistently served as a generous Purple Ribbon Sponsor, providing financial assistance that helps support fair programming and improvements.

In addition to its sponsorship contributions, the bank has encouraged employee volunteerism, with staff members regularly assisting with special projects and youth activities during the fair. Their participation has helped create memorable experiences for young fairgoers while demonstrating a strong commitment to the community.

Fair officials expressed gratitude for the bank’s ongoing partnership, noting that its support has played a key role in sustaining the event and promoting local agricultural traditions.

“We value our relationship with the State Bank of Toledo and look forward to continuing that partnership for many years to come,” organizers said.

Lyon Family Legacy Celebrated

The final 2026 Friend of the Fair honorees were Eric Lyon and Stuart Lyon of Lyon Jerseys located in rural Toledo, whose family’s agricultural legacy spans more than a century.

Service to youth and agriculture has long been a hallmark of the Lyon family. Jerseys became part of the operation in 1924 through 4-H projects, beginning a tradition that has continued for more than 100 years. Over three generations, members of the Lyon family have actively participated in 4-H programs and youth livestock activities.

Eric and Stuart have continued that commitment by encouraging family members to stay involved in 4-H and agricultural programs, helping young people develop leadership skills, livestock knowledge, and a lifelong appreciation for agriculture.

Fair officials said the Lyon family embodies the spirit of the Friend of the Fair Award through its dedication to farming, community service, youth development, and agricultural education.

“Although the dairy barn has gone quiet, the Lyon family’s commitment to agriculture, youth, and community remains as strong as ever,” organizers said. “Their legacy of resilience, leadership, service, and stewardship continues to strengthen Tama County and Iowa agriculture for generations to come.”
