DYSART – The tidy and colorful Wilson Street yard belonging to Roberta Flint and her son, Curtis Flint, has been designated the Dysart Garden Club’s Blue Ribbon Flowers of the Month for August.

The Flints’ midcentury ranch sits on a small lot teeming with potted annuals and perennial beds, providing a cheerful burst of color along the east end of Wilson Street, where most street-facing yards are well-kept but minimalist.

Roberta first purchased the home in 2021 after relocating back to Iowa from Missouri. When they moved in, there was little landscaping beyond some healthy hydrangea bushes, Curtis told the newspaper. In the years since, Curtis, now retired, has steadily expanded the gardens, including several rose plantings – his mother’s favorite flower.

The mix of perennials surrounding the front and west sides of the home as well as the detached garage greatly piqued this reporter’s curiosity during the newspaper’s visit last Sunday evening. Blooms remained abundant despite the late August calendar. Curtis said he works purposefully to keep the yard blooming in succession all season by selecting varieties that peak at different times.

A large lantana growing near the garage was among the yard’s standout features Sunday evening. Nearby, a large purple aster was poised to soon take its turn in the late summer sun.

Curtis said one of his mother’s favorite summer activities is sitting on their front porch and enjoying all the flowers.

“She’s taught me everything I know,” he said when asked about his green thumb.

And while he enjoys creating a welcoming outdoor space for himself and his mother, Curtis said he also hopes the neighborhood enjoys it, too.
