Radon Gas Awareness presentation scheduled for Nov. 10 in Traer
TRAER – Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Tama County invites community members to attend a free educational presentation on radon gas on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 6:30 p.m. at the Traer Public Library (531 Second Street).
The presentation will feature Kapil Arora, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach agricultural engineering specialist, who will discuss radon testing, understanding test results, and mitigation strategies that can help reduce radon levels in homes. The program is designed to increase awareness of the health risks associated with radon and provide practical information for protecting families and communities.
Radon is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that forms naturally in the soil and can accumulate in homes. Long-term exposure to elevated radon levels can increase the risk of lung cancer. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency identifies radon as the second leading cause of lung cancer and a significant public health concern.
According to the EPA, the entire state of Iowa is considered at high risk for elevated radon levels. High concentrations of radon can be found in any type of home, including new or older homes, well-sealed or drafty homes, and homes with or without basements. Because radon cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted, testing is the only way to determine if a home has elevated radon levels.
Residents are encouraged to register for this free program by contacting the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Tama County office at 641-484-2703.
Each registered household will receive one free radon test kit.
