Curtis Foley

It is with great sadness that the family of Curtis Robert Foley, announces his unexpected passing in his sleep, due to complications of diabetes on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, at his home in Traer, at the age of 40.

Curtis was born on June 30, 1978 in Iowa City, Iowa, son of Kathy (Foley) Koob and Jeff Voelschow. He graduated from North Tama School in 1997. He went to work at McKenna Pro in Waterloo after graduation where he stayed until 2004. After that, he worked at Traer Manufacturing for 3 years until the Traer facility was closed. He later worked at Casey’s in Dysart, and most recently he was employed at the Sunnyside Tavern & Cafe in Traer.

As a little boy, Curtis loved Legos. He was always busy building and designing things. He was an avid music lover and much of his time was spent engaged in his passion for music. He often gathered with his friends, listening to them while they played music. On the sports side, he loved the Chicago Cubs and the Bears. He also loved animals and loved walking in nature as often as possible.

From a very young age and throughout his entire life, Curtis had a calm, quiet wisdom; way beyond his years. Curtis loved inspirational poems and quotes and he also loved sharing them. Curtis was a true inspiration and was dearly loved by his family and his many friends. He had a huge compassionate, caring heart that was filled with grace and a beautiful, kind and gentle soul. He took life as it came and he didn’t complain about anything. He was trustworthy, genuine, honest, loyal, and authentic. Being an old and greatly evolved soul, he lived his spirituality 24/7, each and every day of his entire life, inspiring all who were lucky enough to know him and spend time with him.

His brother, Christopher said, “For the cards he had been dealt, he was one of the most positive people ever. Always ready to help anyone.”

His grandfather Gregg said, “I never heard him complain. I could always get a big smile.”

A good friend of his, Jason Douglas, said, “He was probably the most selfless, caring, giving person I’ve ever known.”

Although this world has lost his precious physical presence and he will be sadly missed, his sincere love, his wonderful energy, and his profound, sweet memory will forever remain and live on. To our dear beloved Curtis, until we meet again, may your spirit have a good journey…

A Celebration of Life Ceremony for Curtis was held on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at the North Tama Activity Center in Traer and was attended by family and friends. Beautiful organ music was played by Curtis’ good friend, Tomomi McWhirter and wonderful guitar music and vocals were performed by Curtis’ good friend and employer, Jason Douglas. Prayers were offered by Father Michael Hutchison, Pastor of St. Paul Catholic Church in Traer and also by Dave Mason, owner of McKenna Pro in Waterloo.

Curtis is survived by his mother and stepfather, Kathy (Foley) Koob and Dennis Koob of Dysart; his father, Jeff (Cheryl) Voelschow of La Porte City; one brother, Christopher Taylor of Cedar Falls; two half sisters, Julie Voelschow (Scott Tucker) of Pinellas Park, FL and Victoria (Jeremy) Kilburg of Bellevue; two step-brothers, Jason (Schiela) Richter of Cedar Falls and Chad (Melanie) Richter of Hudson; one step-sister, Megan (Jeremy) Neiswonger of La Porte City; maternal grandparents, Wanda (Gregg) Robinson of Lansing, paternal grandmother, Helen Voelschow of La Porte City; step grandparents, Floyd and Phyllis Koob of Cedar Falls, and many other loving relatives and friends.

Curtis was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Robert “Bob” Foley; paternal grandfather, Harold “Bud” Voelschow; maternal great-grandparents, Russell (Kathryn) Greenhalgh and Ralph (Evelyn) Foley; paternal great-grandparents, Richard (Rita) Lorenzen and Howard (Lena) Voelschow; uncle, Scott Voelschow.
