Gaylord “Fred” Henriksen

Gaylord “Fred” Henriksen, 82, of Afton, died Wednesday, August 7, 2019 at the EveryStep Greater Regional Hospice House in Creston. A Memorial Reception will be from 2:00 7:00 p.m. Friday, August 16, 2019 at Powers Funeral Home 612 N. Dodge in Afton, with family receiving friends from 5:00 7:00 p.m. Friday. Burial will be held at a later date at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Afton. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to the family for later designation. Gaylord John Henriksen, son of John Gilbert Henriksen and Laura Herminna (Christensen) Henriksen, was born on March 4, 1937, in Audubon County, Ia. He joined the Army National Guard at a young age and served for 8 years.

On January 17, 1960, Fred was united in marriage to Mary Lois Drinovsky in Traer, Ia. Following their marriage, they lived in Greenfield for one year before moving to Buckingham, Ia. Fred began his life-long farming career while residing in Buckingham where he raised hogs and sheep and farmed the land as well. In 1997, Fred and Mary moved to their current home north of Afton.

As a couple, they loved to travel. They spent the summer seasons at their cabin they built on Lake of the Woods in Canada and the winters were spent at Toledo Bend, TX and then the later years in Scottsdale, Ariz. Fred loved fishing. He also enjoyed carving birds out of wood, spending time on the golf course, snowmobiling and motorcycle trips. Most of all, Fred loved all of the time spent with his family and friends.

Fred was a member of the Our Savior Lutheran Church where he was confirmed and he was also a member of the Elks. He was also a member of the Oak Leaf Golf Course in Reinbeck, Ia.

Fred is survived by his wife Mary; brother Lyle (wife Evelyn) Henriksen of Corning; sisters, Lois (husband Cliff) Olsen of Creston and Donna Stone of Kent, Wash.; nieces, Roxanne (husband Jack) Brown of Creston, Cheryl Olsen of Creston, Mary (husband Brian) Kannas of Corning, Laurie (husband Jeremy) Kierstead of Snoqualmie, Wash. and Julie (husband Chris) Keaton of Burien, Wash.; nephews, Darrell Olsen of Afton, Mark Henriksen of Corning, Marvin (wife T.J.) Henriksen of Corning and John (wife Jo Ellen) Henriksen of Audubon; brother-in-law Roger (wife Peg) Drinovsky of Hudson, Ia., nephews Doug (wife Wendy) Drinovsky of Hudson, Ia. and Greg (wife Sue) Drinovsky of Topeka, Kan.; niece Andrea (husband Nate) Rohrssen of Cedar Rapids, Ia.; along with many great-nieces and great-nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, mother and father-in-law William and Albina Drinovsky, brother Virgil (Betty) Henriksen, brother-in-law Willis Stone, nephew, Alan Henriksen and great-great nephew Wyatt James Wilson.
