Robert “Tony” Kullmer

Robert Anthony “Tony” Kullmer, 77, of Aurora, Colorado, passed into eternity on November 28, 2020.

He was born November 1, 1943 in Marshalltown, Iowa to parents Robert and Pearl Kullmer. Tony graduated from high school in Dysart, IA and completed a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Northern Iowa. Tony was married to Vaneta Kullmer for 51 years.

Tony enjoyed a varied professional career. An accomplished jazz musician, Tony was active in the professional music scene throughout Iowa and surrounding states in the 1960s and 1970s. For a day job, he taught all levels of public school band in State Center, Mt. Pleasant, Ottumwa and Eddyville, Iowa. Seeking change, Tony crossed careers and became an agent for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance. That profession took him to Texas where he later returned to teaching band. Tony retired from teaching in 2010 with over 30 years of teaching experience. His students benefited greatly from his musical passion, excelling musically and even pursuing careers in music.

In addition to music education, Tony volunteered his expertise to his community. He was the director of the Ottumwa Municipal Band for 10 years. Additionally, he directed musical theater at local community colleges and was musically active in church. Tony enjoyed reading scripture and coin collecting for hobbies.

Tony is survived by his wife, Vaneta Kullmer of Aurora, Colorado; son, Robert Kullmer of Aurora, CO; daughter, Becky Gann of Council Bluffs, Iowa; brothers, Steven Kullmer and Larry Kullmer of Dysart, Iowa. Tony is also survived by seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Pearl Kullmer and brother, Bill Kullmer.

Graveside Services will be Saturday, July 3, at the Dysart Cemetery at 11:30 am.
