Shirley was born September 17, 1937, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of George and Mayme Podhajsky.

Shirley was raised on a farm five miles west of Clutier and attended country school, then went to high school in Traer, graduating in 1956 where she was the Homecoming Queen. When Shirley started school, she only spoke Czech and her first English word was “squirrel.”

She married the love of her life Freddie Kubik on November 26th, 1957, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in rural Clutier. Freddie and Shirley enjoyed a much remembered six-week honeymoon car trip to California. They made their home on the same farm as Shirley was raised. Three children blessed their marriage Michael, Lori and Lisa. She proudly was a farm wife keeping a home, tending a large garden as well as raising chickens, ducks and geese while Freddie farmed the land.

Shirley was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church until it was closed then St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Traer. She was involved in Corpus Christi celebration, rosary society, KD Lodge and FCSLA as treasurer. Shirley was a ZCBJ officer and was also a board member of the Clutier Library.

Shirley was most proud of her Czech heritage and was eager to share that with all. She was active in the Farmers Market where she was known for her rohlicky, kolache, bismarcks and noodles. She sang in the local Czech Trio dressed in traditional costume. She was also a skilled seamstress sewing for her family making many baby blankets and afghans for the church at sewing days.

She loved plants, animals, the outdoors and was a Master Gardener. Most of all she loved her family dearly including all nieces and nephews.

Survivors include one son, Michael Kubik, of Iowa City; two daughters, Lori (Curtis) Fuller, of Solon, and Lisa (Jesse) Lain, of Iowa City; two grandchildren, Adam Fuller, of West Branch, and Ashley (Alec) Slocum, of Boulder, CO; sister, Karlene Cochran, of Traer; several nieces and nephews; and brother-in-law, Robert (Sandra) Kubik.
