Sharlene Ann (Karkosh) Hoeg, 84

Sharlene Ann (Karkosh) Hoeg was called home by the Lord on Friday, October 13th, 2023, at age 84. Sharlene was born June 9th, 1939, in Blackhawk County to Adolph W. and Mildred (Halupnick) Karkosh. She attended school in Reinbeck, Iowa, and later attended AIB in Des Moines, where she met Vernon Hoeg on a blind date with her roommate and cousin.

Visitation was from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at Overton Funeral Home. Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at Ripley United Church of Christ with burial at Buckingham Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family. Vernon and Sharlene were married on December 21st, 1959. They made their home in Reinbeck and Mount Auburn before finally settling down in Traer. To their marriage was born 3 children, a daughter and twin boys.

Sharlene worked at the Corner Cafe in downtown Traer. When Sunrise Hill Care Center was built in 1973, she went to work there in the Laundry Department, becoming the supervisor for 20 some years before retiring. She then took care of her first 2 grandsons, Joshua & Caleb Edwards, along with her “other grandkids” Kristen, Nicole and Jacob Lowe until they started school.

She was a member of Ripley United Church of Christ and The Traer Legion Auxiliary. She spent many hours playing card games with the ladies, usually Pepper or Hand and Foot. She truly enjoyed spending time with her grandkids and great grandkids. She especially loved going to their many sporting events, including football, basketball, baseball, soccer and softball games. She attended the games with her best friend Shirley, as well as attending many UNI Panther football games, having been season ticket holders.

Sharlene is preceded in death by her husband, Vernon; her parents Adolph and Mildred and brother-in-law, Randall Paterson.

She is survived by her daughter, Ronda (Jim) Edwards, of Clutier, Iowa; 2 sons, Bryan (LeAnn) Hoeg, of Grundy Center, Iowa and Ryan (Sarah) Hoeg, of Fruitland, Iowa; 2 sisters, Joyce Paterson, of Arizona, and Geraldine (Jerry) Walter, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 7 grandchildren: Joshua (Alexis) Edwards, of Clutier, Iowa, Caleb (Elizabeth) Edwards, of Boston, Massachusetts, Tanner and Brylee Hoeg, of Grundy Center, Iowa, Heather, Katelyn and Miranda Hoeg, of Fruitland, Iowa; extended grandchildren: Jimmie (Michelle) Edwards, of Aurora, Colorado and Jaime (Scott) Nissen, of Blue Springs, Missouri; great grandchildren: Kale, Oliver, Nash and Everly Edwards, Andrew Edwards, Isaiah & Amanda Edwards, Phoenix Ball and Daisy Hoeg; as well as several nieces and nephews.
